Bringing Chaos to Life

A Curated Portfolio of Chaos Bonsai

About the Artist

Chaos Bonsai began as a passion project with the goal of inspiring people to appreciate the beauty of nature.I was stuck in a small, shaded townhouse and needed to find a way to bring my passion of growing plants to life in a big way.I started in hydroponics, vegetables, and houseplantsI turned to bonsai, putting to use my background in engineering and chemistry to craft a high-performance grow lab.Today I fill my days bringing to life projects some once called "impossible".
And since I've finally cracked the code of growing tiny trees in your home,
I want to share this gift with you.
Let me help you bring nature indoors so that you may revel in its beauty.-- Matthew Monaco, founder of Chaos Bonsai

Tropical Care Guide

Cultivation, Not Calendars

Bonsai is a dynamic, high-metabolism horticultural art. Because your tree lives in an optimized, fast-draining mineral substrate, it relies entirely on you to read its environment.
Ditch the calendar. Watering on a fixed timeline is the fastest way to kill most tropical plants. No more "Watering Tuesdays".
Instead, use this observant approach to keep your tree locked in peak health.

💧 Water

Check your plants regularly.
Inspect, and water only if your plant needs it -- don't water if it doesn't!
Lift the pot when it is fully saturated. When the plant is half the weight or less upon check up, it's time to water. The soil surface by this point will have lost its sheen but might still be dark in color. This is the perfect time to water.Never let the soil dry out completely, unless your plant is a succulent. The surface should never be tan in color.Using a watering can or the sink, gently and evenly water the soil surface to runoff. Avoid displacing the soil with strong water streams.Never let the pot sit in standing water. Drain excess water from trays or dishes promptly, to avoid disrupting oxygen exchange and rotted roots.

☀️ Energy

Positioning your tree for maximum energy capture:South: Ideal conditions.
West: Good conditions. Afternoon light and heat.
East: Poor conditions. Cold, minimal morning light.
North: Impossible conditions. Supplemental LED lighting is necessary. Grow lights are recommended for all indoor growing generally and improve outcomes dramatically.
Plants are phototropic -- they grow toward the light source. Rotate the plant 180° every week so that their energy is distributed evenly.Maintain temperatures from 16°C to 28°C. Shield your plants from drafts and HVAC vents.

🚦 Gas & Brake

High-performance aerated substrates are a chemical blank slate. Your tree's soil mix only has enough slow-release nutricote to feed it for up to 100 days. After that, you need to refuel:A -- Automated: Top-dress the soil with slow-release prills according to package directions. Nutricote total is highly recommended.
OR
B -- Manual: Water with a liquid fertilizer according to package directions during growth. Never feed a bone-dry substrate. Water first.
Hitting the brakes:
Tropicals love to pump energy to their outer tips, especially at the top. To maintain vascular health, let new shoots extend to 4–5 leaf pairs.
Then make a clean structural cut back to 1-2 leaf pairs, right above a leaf joint with sharp shears. The direction the remaining leaf points dictates the exact trajectory of your new branch architecture. The apex of your tree will probably need more aggressive thinning.

🛡️ Security

Keep the soil surface free of debris. Fallen leaves block surface-level air exchange and create a nesting ground for fungi and bacteria.Indoor plants are closed systems. Without biological predators, tiny pests can sometimes go unchecked.Scan your plant's foliage regularly:Mites: fine webbing, bronze patches Thrips: fast crawlers, silver streaks Aphids: honeydew, exoskeletons
Scale: honeydew, armored bumps
If pests are detected, take the plant to a basin and execute a firm, high-temperature water blast (warm, not scalding). This physically obliterates the pest colony safely and clears debris without chemical stress. For severe infestations, horticultural sprays or soaps may be required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is this a store? What are your hours?
A: Chaos Bonsai is NOT a retail store. It is my private horticultural laboratory and bonsai studio.
I do not have public walk-in hours. Access to my facility and specialized inventory is available by appointment ONLY.
Why? My high-density shelving is an optimized, active workspace dedicated to intensive horticultural cultivation, styling workshops, and private consulting.
I do not maintain a casual retail floor. Whether you are a serious collector looking for premium material or a beginner wondering where you should start,
you can book a private session with me at the top of the page to browse the pieces and have all your questions answered.
Q: Can I buy your trees online and have them shipped?
A: No. I do not ship live specimen trees via standard courier.
High-performance shohin bonsai are living, engineered ecosystems, not durable consumer goods. My online portfolio showcases only a fraction of what is actively developing on my benches. To protect the structural integrity of the canopy and the root system, I offer local pickup or white-glove delivery across the GTA.Q: Why does your care advice contradict standard plant tags?
A: Standard retail tags are written for generic survival in poor quality soil, not high-yield development.
My cultivation system utilizes aggressive, high-metabolism techniques -- such as heavy 90% defoliation, direct root-pruning, and my own custom porous mineral substrates -- to maximize vascular velocity and branch ramification. I treat tree management as a predictable mechanical loop, not a guessing game.Q: Do you offer tree maintenance or styling services?
A: Yes. I provide technical botanical consulting, structural restyling workshops, and contract maintenance.
I offer commercial plant display installations -- reach out to me if you're looking to turn your business into a tropical paradise! Private collection maintenance services are also available. If you have premium material that requires advanced structural styling or ongoing metabolic management, contact me directly. Japanese style garden services are now available. Suitable for small or high density yards. Large-scale landscaping services are not currently offered.Q: I am new to tropical shohin. Will I kill these trees?
A: Not if you run the protocol. Read up on my care guide above.
Every tree I release is backed by my efficient and structured operational codes. You are guaranteed to receive a highly vigorous plant in excellent health.
By following my policies regarding water, energy, gas & brake, and security, you've unlocked the ultimate cheat-code to tropical cultivation.
I have stripped away the vague, traditional guesswork. Follow the protocol, and ditch the schedule. Your green thumb is calling.

Studio Policies

Sales & Variations

All Sales Final:
Every specimen, custom soil blend, or workshop slot purchased from Chaos Bonsai is final sale. I do not accept returns, exchanges, or issue refunds.
Sizing References:
Any physical objects (such as mugs or tools) included in studio photography are for scale and size reference only, and are not included with purchase unless explicitly stated otherwise.
Living Art Variations:
You are purchasing a living, evolving specimen. Natural appearance may fluctuate by season. Depending on the time of year, a tree may present with more or fewer leaves, structural fine-branching, or active blooms than what is pictured in studio photos.

Plant Liability

Post-Sale Care:
I produces highly optimized, high-metabolism trees, but environmental control and liability is transferred completely to the buyer upon pickup or delivery. Chaos Bonsai is not liable for subsequent plant decline, dieback, or death caused by improper handling, transportation shock, or deviations from proper tropical care protocols.
Acclimitization Time:
As living creatures, plants need time to adapt to new conditions. I do NOT recommend performing work on newly purchased plantst. Please allow plants at least three weeks to adjust before performing any work, including pruning, wiring, and repotting. Failing to do so may result in plant decline or death.
Workshop Scope:
Studio advice offered during one-on-one workshops is pedagogical. The hands-on execution of root-work, aggressive styling, or defoliation is performed at the buyer's own discretion regarding the long-term recovery of their tree. Basic care advice is provided free of charge, but advanced techniques are reserved for instruction during workshop slots ONLY.

Studio Liability

Professional Tool Use:
Workshops involve the use of specialized, sharp horticultural machinery and hand tools (including but not limited to high-carbon steel shears, concave cutters, and aluminum wire). You assume all risk of personal injury, including cuts or punctures, arising from the handling of these tools.
Nursery Environment Hazards:
My high-density indoor cultivation laboratory utilizes specialized bright cultivation lights. Exposure to fertilizers, consumer-grade pesticides (pyrethrin), insects, high humidity and temperatures (24-30°C, 80%+ RH) is possible.
You acknowledge that navigating an active nursery space carries inherent environmental risks.
Release of Liability: You agree to fully release, waive, and hold harmless Chaos Bonsai and myself from any and all liability, claims, or demands for personal injury, property damage, or eye strain occurring during your session, pickup, or presence on the studio property.
